For the monograph Environmental Security, Hazards and Risks, published by the Institute of Architecture and Urban & Spatial Planning of Serbia (Special edition no. 96), authors Prof. Dr Vladica Ristić and Prof. Dr Marija Maksin were awarded the City of Belgrade’s “Despot Stefan Lazarević” Award for 2025 for an outstanding work in the field of natural and technical sciences.
The award-winning scientific monograph represents a unique and comprehensive scholarly contribution in the field of ecological security, hazards, and risks within both domestic and international scientific literature. While hazards and risks have previously been examined in global research and scientific discourse, they have largely been addressed in an integrated manner. A particularly significant and original scientific contribution of this monograph lies in its novel differentiation between hazards and risks, their systematic classification, and the methodologies proposed for their assessment and mitigation.
The importance of this monograph is reflected in its synthesis and systematisation of existing theoretical perspectives and international practice. Its scientific contribution resides in a new and integrated understanding of the subject matter, as well as in the models for hazard and risk assessment and management proposed by the authors. This scholarly work enables a complex and holistic understanding of the interdependencies between the environment and ecological security, the prevailing trends and possibilities for achieving effective hazard and risk management, and the simultaneous strengthening of societal resilience to risk.
Owing to its exceptional value and original contribution to interdisciplinary scientific literature in the fields of ecological security, environmental protection, architecture, civil engineering, and urbanism, the monograph was in 2025 classified among distinguished monographs of national significance by the competent disciplinary board of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Technological Development.
