Results of the competition for the award “Milorad Macura” and “Dimitrije Perišić” for the year 2024

Annual Award in the Field of Architecture and Urban Planning “Milorad Macura”

The Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning of Serbia for the award of the annual Milorad Macura Awards for the best master’s thesis and the best doctoral dissertation in the field of architecture and urbanism in 2023/2024 received a lot of quality papers, and the formation of the shortlist and the final decision was not an easy task. In the selection, we were anchored among other criteria for evaluation and the desire to equally reward works that are from both areas: architecture and urbanism.

The Commission of the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning of Serbia for the award of the annual “Milorad Macura” award for the best master’s thesis in the field of architecture and urbanism, considered four received applications, namely: 1) three proposals from the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture: a master’s thesis entitled “On top of the Belgrade Stream: Infrastructure of the Future”, by Nikola Markanović, a master’s thesis entitled “Vista Alegre:  Resilient-Connective Landscape”, by Tamara Mladenović and master’s thesis entitled “Application of Ecological Remediation in the Regeneration of Brownfield Area: Petrochemical Plant “Solventul” as the New Gate of Timisoara”, by Milica Spajić; and 2) a proposal from the University of Novi Sad – Faculty of Technical Sciences, Department of Architecture and Urban Planning: a master’s thesis entitled “Application of textile formwork and digital simulations in the design of decorative concrete panels”, by Ina Pašić.

After reviewing all four master’s theses, the Commission made the following decision:

The “Milorad Macura” Annual Award for the best master’s thesis in the field of architecture and urban planning in the school year 2023/2024 is awarded to Milica Spajić, for the work entitled “Application of Ecological Remediation in the Regeneration of the Brownfield Area: Petrochemical Plant “Solventul” as the New Gate of Timisoara“, defended at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture, under the mentorship of prof. Aleksandra Đukić, PhD;

The Commission of the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning of Serbia for the award of the annual award “Milorad Macura” for the best doctoral dissertation in the field of architecture and urbanism, considered nine received applications for doctoral dissertations, namely: 1) eight proposals from the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture, for the dissertation entitled “Change of Public Interest in the Culture of Planning in Serbia at the Level of the General Urban Plan” by Dr. Ana Graovac,  dissertation entitled “Application of the Concept of Creating Places in the Process of Sustainable Urban Transformation of Border Towns of the Republic of North Macedonia” by Dr. Damjan Balkoski, dissertation “The Role of Architectural Drawing in the Design Process at the Beginning of the 21st Century” by Dr. Hristina Meseldžija, dissertation “Interpretation of Hybridity in Architecture” by Dr. Ivana Lovrinčević, dissertation “Model of Heat-Sensitive Urban (Re)Design of the City Square in Serbia” by Dr. Lazar Mandić,  dissertation “Modalities of Digital Media Application in the Presentation of Cultural Heritage in Public City Spaces”, by Dr. Milja Mladenović, dissertation “Drawing as a Methodological Tool for Reading the City Landscape”, by Dr. Snežana Zlatković and dissertation “The Role of Open Spaces in the Restructuring of Settlements Planned and Built in Belgrade in the Period 1960-1980”, by Dr. Jovana Bugarski; and 2) one proposal of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture – University of Niš, for the dissertation entitled: “Urban models for the application of integrated approaches to rainwater runoff management in the function of sustainable regeneration and planning of multi-family housing areas”, by Dr. Magdalena Slavković.

After reviewing all nine dissertations, the Committee made the following decision:

The Annual Award “Milorad Macura” for the best doctoral dissertation in the field of architecture and urban planning in the school year 2023/2024 is awarded equally for two papers defended at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture, to the author Dr. Ana Graovac, for the dissertation entitled “Change of Public Interest in the Culture of Planning in Serbia at the Level of the General Urban Plan“, under the mentorship of prof. Dr. Marija Maruna and the author Dr. Ivana Lovrinčević, for the dissertation “Interpretation of Hybridity in Architecture“, under the mentorship of prof. Vladimir Lojanica.

Members of the Commission, consisting of Dr. Nataša Danilović Hristić, Dr. Tanja Njegić and Dr. Marija Lalošević, thank all the candidates who applied and mentors supported the applications, as well as the home faculties and congratulate the awardees.

Annual Award in the Field of Spatial Planning “Dimitrije Perišić”

In response to the competition announced by the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning of Serbia for the “Dimitrije Perišić” annual awards for the best master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation in the field of spatial planning for the 2023/2024 academic year, one high-quality submission was received in each category.

The Committee of the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning of Serbia for awarding the “Dimitrije Perišić” prize for the best master’s thesis in spatial planning reviewed the submitted application from the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Geography, titled “The Impact of European Territorial Cooperation Programs on Territorial Cohesion and Spatial Planning,” authored by Andrija Planić.

After reviewing this master’s thesis, the Committee made the following decision:

The “Dimitrije Perišić” award for the best master’s thesis in spatial planning for the 2023/2024 academic year is granted to Andrija Planić for the thesis titled “The Impact of European Territorial Cooperation Programs on Territorial Cohesion and Spatial Planning,” defended at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Geography, under the mentorship of Associate Professor Dr. Zora Živanović.

The Committee for awarding the “Dimitrije Perišić” prize for the best doctoral dissertation in spatial planning reviewed the submitted application from the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Geography, titled “Development of an Integrated Approach to Spatial Planning as Adaptation to Climate Change in Serbia,” authored by Ljubica Duškov.

After reviewing this doctoral dissertation, the Committee made the following decision:

The “Dimitrije Perišić” award for the best doctoral dissertation in spatial planning for the 2023/2024 academic year is granted to Ljubica Duškov for the dissertation titled “Development of an Integrated Approach to Spatial Planning as Adaptation to Climate Change in Serbia,” defended at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Geography, under the mentorship of Full Professor Dr. Dejan Filipović.

The members of the Committee, Dr. Tamara Maričić, Dr. Marijana Pantić, and Marko Perišić, extend their congratulations to the awardees and express gratitude to all applicants, their mentors, and their respective faculties for their contributions.
